For our Bachelor thesis two other students and I wanted to give a user the sensation of flying. We therefore built a quadro copter with stereo vision. The video streams got sent to an Oculus Rift where the user could not only watch their surroundings but also control the copter via head movement. The Copter would slightly tilt in the direction the user would tilt their head which caused the copter to drift in that direction. The project was quite big and until the very end we had some hardware related problems which made the copter really unreliable. Every once in a while one of the motors would stop spinning and the copter would fly into a random direction like crazy which is why we had to keep the copter leashed to both the floor and the ceiling.
